There are multiple ways of encountering survivors. Some are always there, some are time-based, some are random, and some will find you.

You are not forced to keep allies, but it's really hard to survive without them

There are no children allies.

There are dog allies. They take up an ally slot in travel mode. They are great at warning you about dangers you can't see and they are also effective against humans.

Allies will frequently bring areas to the player's attention, unlocking them on the map. Locations can be found without allies, so you're not cut off from content if you're missing an ally with that info.

Allies can panic in combat. Some allies are afraid of zombies , some are afraid of getting hurt, some panic at just leaving the shelter.

Each ally has perks specific to them, usually based on their skills/former jobs.

Allies gain skill points differently than the player. They receive 1 skill point for every day they are alive, and will sink that into a predetermined character path. There are ways of influencing their perks/focus, but not directly arrange their skill/stat points.

Allies may be in relationships, but any relationships you might have with someone are fleeting.

Sometimes confrontations between two allies can escalate to the point that the player needs to get involved or risk major consequences.

Allies that don’t like each other may lose confidence in you if you're not able to convince them it's a good idea to have the other ally around.

If enough people want you out and there's someone willing to lead them, then you may be overthrown as leader. It's a game over situation, so keep an eye on your allies.

Bud Larsen

Bud is found in the old residence area in the south. He is barricaded in his home, with a few corpses out front. His wife has turned and he is keeping her in the basement. You can convince him to do a mercy killing then return with you to the shelter. He is good with firearms.

Doug Schultz

Doug is an ally that may become available during the first week in Dead State: The First Seven Days. When you first wake up at the shelter, Doug remains unconscious in a cot nearby. Elaine Martin

Elaine Martin

Elaine is a flight attendant from the same fated flight that brought Doug Schultz and the player character crashing down into Splendid, Texas. While she's one of your starting allies, she is too emotionally wrecked to contribute anything in the shelter at first. If you talk to her daily with the soothing and encouraging options, after about a week she can function. You can choose to make her a party member or counselor. As a counselor, she will bring to your attention other allies who need your attention. She can do the Hospitality Job to earn +4 daily morale.

Fiona Parks

Gillian DeVries

Grant White

Harold Kyun

Isobel Dee

Karen Landey

Jenifer Strong

Young girl, clerk at the Soaring Eagle Resort in the far west. She is good at hospitality and medical. Does not handle stress well. You will need Priscilla in the party to access her by foot. She seems to create the hospitality job, though that is available from the beginning.

Jodie Hopkins

Joel Oswalt

Joel Oswalt

Joel is a slightly slow but well-meaning Splendid police officer, one of the few who remains both in Splendid and alive. He's one of the starting allies in the shelter. He has good ranged capabilities, but panics when low on health.

Lane Vibesit

The radio station DJ you hear from the beginning. He is located in the far west. Have Priscilla in your party to access him. He asks you to find some of his listeners but they are dead. He has strong ranged (6), mechanical (5), and science skills (4).

Lightning

Lightning is an attack dog that shows up at the front of the shelter on day 22. You can give him food and he joins the group. High melee value, can be put on guard duty.

Lloyd McCroskey

Mark Corbeau

Mark is located at a rest stop in the south. He is non threatening and if you don't harm him, you can get Ryan and Michiru with him. He can create the chef job, though that is best left to Ryan. Mark has more skills.

Max Getz

Max Getz

Max Getz shows up at the shelter automatically during the first week of Dead State: The First Seven Days. He's covered in blood and unwilling to discuss his history. He's primarily a melee-focused character with high strength and high vigor, making him a good ally to bring on supply runs. Elaine recommends you talk to him to help him resolve his past trauma.

Melina Guzman

She can be recruited from the San Saba pharmacy with her husband. She has high mechanical skill and if you put her in maintenance, her mechanical skill will grow over time. After Oscar's death, she will continuously ask for a funeral.

Mia Seza

Michiru Yata

She is Japanese. She is a Doctor but does not speak English. She is found by talking to Mark Corbeau (chef) and not threatening him. She and Mark are with a teenager boy, Ryan Michaels, who does not have many skills but can be a chef. She has high medical and keeps rising in that skill, then in science. Not useful in the field because of no skills aside from Medical, then Science. Ryan is trying to teach her English and will request you find a Japanese/English Dictionary.

Nathan Harris

Nathan Harris is a recruitable survivor who can be found in Menard Graveyard, west of the Mason Supermarket. Has good negotiation skills. He is African American with a green shirt. He was in real estate before. To get to him, you need to open a series of doors like you are in a maze with invisible walls. He talks to you about getting materials to make fishing poles so that you can fish as a source of food.

Oscar Guzman

Oscar can be found in the San Saba pharmacy with his injured wife, Melina Guzman. If you have Renee with you, she can patch up Melina and you can bring both back to the shelter. Oscar has strong strength, agility, and melee ability. He is a superior tank to Anita.

Parisa Sharazi

Paul Rainier

Priscilla Butler

Priscilla is a rural girl that appears at the gate with Todd on day 19. She is very religious. She will help you get horses and can be a farmer. Her survival skill of 8 allows you to travel all over the map on foot with her.

Regina

Regina is the former leader of the Coyotes Motorcycle gang, along with her lover, NZ. Her lover was murdered by the current leader, Marshall Streeter, but she managed to flee before Marshall or his followers caught her. She arrives at the shelter on day 25. Regardless or whether or not you take her in, the Coyotes will come to the Shelter demanding her. If you have her there, you can choose to turn her over, negotiate, or fight. She will recommend you go to the Coyote HQ and assassinate their leader. That would cause the gang to break up and not threaten the shelter anymore. This decision is one of the crisis moments of the game. She has high survival skill, allowing you to travel far on the map. She is a sub leader and can be bribed to side with you in meetings.

Renee Cass

Renee Cass

Renee is one of the starting allies in Dead State: The First Seven Days. She came to the shelter with Anita Cass, her mother, and serves as the early medic of the game.

Given her potential growth in Medicine and Science, this may have a long term benefit.

Sandy Doubleday

Rich and snobby woman located in the mansion a little NE of San Angelo. You access her by going in the back door in the gate. She has good leadership (6), negotiation (5), and ranged (4) skill. She is a sub leader that can be bribed with luxuries to side with you.

Sara Seza

Sir Charleston

Troy

Todd Kantell

Todd is a television preacher. He shows up at the gate on day 19 with a young farm girl, Priscilla Butler. He is a sub leader, but can be threatened to side with you. Bully him when he initially challenges you. Later, pray with him and allow him to start his prayer group. He will then be deferential to you.

Ulysses Ford

Vic Castillo

Vic Castillo

Vic is one of Joel's fellow officers, and he shows up towards the end of Dead State: The First Seven Days. Vic is the first sub-leader introduced in the game. He is a Ranged-Focused Character with high perception, above average strength and above average agility. Together with his high perception and two ranged based perks, Vic is a reliable marksman. You should allow him to discipline Joel and not dispute him in public. He is totally focused on security, as long as you make security a priority, your interests and his are aligned.

If he is not in your party, he may be lost as part of the 3 ally elimination bug from visiting Llano Residential (along with Oscar, Doug, or possibly Mark).
