Darlene Lumpkin

Darlene Lumpkin is a former waitress. However, she quickly adapted to the new world and saved Ulysses Ford's life when the outbreak happened. She always stayed by his side since then.

Recruitment[ | ]

Darlene is recruited together with Ulysses Ford. Your first chance to recruit them is if you agree to their food exchange, and the meeting goes off well - if you have a Negotiation skill of 8 or more, you'll be able to successfully ask Ford and his team to join you. If the player wasn't able to recruit them then, they'll show up later and ask to join the Shelter.

Events[ | ]

  • The morning after Darlene joins the Shelter, she comes to your room and makes it very clear that if anything happens to Ulysses Ford (or others in her group, if they survived), she's going to cause some serious problems. (There are no Mood penalties here, just flavor responses)
  • At 5 days, if Ryan is still alive, you'll overhear Darlene asking what's bothering him. If you tell Darlene to leave him alone, or tell Ryan to tell her, both she and Ryan will have a small Mood penalty; if you don't interfere, the two will speak further, and both will gain a small Mood boost.
  • At 1 week and a half, she'll come to you with a request - she wants to return to her trailer and pick up her custom bow (the named weapon "Sterling"). Make sure to bring Darlene with you when you visit this location - she's the only one who can find the bow.
  • After 2 weeks, if Regina is in the Shelter, you'll run into a conversation between the two that sounds like they're about to start a fight. If you try to interfere, both of them will have a very small Mood penalty, and return to talking - about how to best beat someone up. It's obvious the two of them are fast friends...
  • After 18 days, Darlene will bring up the location of Pleasant Oaks Summer Camp, near Lake Travis, in case the player is interested in investigating it.
  • After 1 month, Darlene asks to see your map: if you let her, she brings up the location of a farm that could be useful.
  • After 1 month, if Vic and Darlene are together, they'll ask for a day to spend together. If you freely give them a day, it will give them both a Mood boost, and raise Vic's respect level for you. If you are crass about it or refuse to give them a day off, they'll both suffer a Mood penalty (and Vic will lose respect for you).
  • At 1 month, she'll come to you and admit that she's lost count of the number of people she's killed, and feels nothing about it. You can tell her to make the undead her priority (gaining her the "Living Dead Killer" trait), or to not worry about killing humans (giving her the "Natural Born Killer" trait).
  • If Ford dies, Darlene will yell at you the morning after the incident - if you ask her who she's talking about, she'll gain a Mood penalty and run off. If you are more considerate, she'll ask for a funeral or service for him. You can either spend parts (if you have them), earning her a Mood boost, or if you have Negotiation of 7 or above, say the parts can't be spared but that she can hold a service, resulting in a Mood boost. If you refuse any kind of service, she suffers a medium Mood penalty and leaves in a huff.
  • If Darlene is bit, she takes it poorly with a massive mood penalty

Darlene starts with a strong focus on her Ranged skill, with brief detours into Survival, Mechanical, Melee, and Leadership - late in the game she picks up a few points in Medical and Negotiation, but more as an afterthought. Her stats focus primarily on maxing out her Perception, with a single side point in Vigor.

Traits[ | ]

Initial

  • Archer: "Darlene is a deadly swift archer, costing her 2 less AP to attack with a bow."
  • Frenzy: "If Darlene is at less than a third of her health, her attacks grow less focused, giving her a 25% penalty to damage."
  • Home On The Range: "This ally enjoys having a Shooting Range in the Shelter, and will gain a one-time Mood bonus after it is completed."

Gained Via Conversation

  • Living Dead Killer: "Darlene has poured her aggression into destroying the undead, and gains an additional 5% critical chance against them."

OR

  • Natural Born Killer: "Darlene has lost any concern about killing humans, and gains an additional 5% critical chance against them."

Play Style[ | ]

Darlene makes an excellent addition to the combat team as a Ranged character with high Perception, and is deadly with a bow. Pair her with the unique bow Sterling at the earliest opportunity.

Darlene will react negatively to killing neutral survivors.
