Elaine Martin

Elaine was a flight attendant on the plane that the PC and Doug were on when it crashed. One of the passengers got infected and began attacking people, and Elaine tried to get the pilot's attention to let them kn ow about the issue. When the pilot opened the door for her, he was bitten, and the plane crashed in Texas, leaving only Elaine alive with two unconscious passengers. She starts the game in an almost catatonic state of PTSD, but through dialogue with the player, she opens up more. It is also possible to encourage her suicide.

Elaine can either become a workhorse around the Shelter, or the Counselor for the allies.

Recruitment

Automatically recruited, but begins the game with the uncooperative status. Through dialogue, the player can ease her guilt about the plane crash and unlock Elaine as a usable character.

Events

*Spoilers*

  • To talk Elaine out of suicide, be sure to talk to her every day - never push her or blame her, but keep your tone gentle and understanding. After about a week, she'll come up to you in the morning, and confess that although she thought about killing herself, she wants instead to make up for her mistake. This will be where you can guide her in her Trait choice: if you ask her to counsel the survivors, she'll pick up the "Counselor" perk; if you tell her to work her debt off, she'll pick up the "Fierce" perk instead.
  • If Getz is in the Shelter, Elaine will come to you, and say that Getz's hurting like she was, and ask if you'd speak with him and try to help. You can wave her off or dismiss him (causes a small Mood penalty), or take her seriously and thank her for her help (small Mood boost).
  • If Elaine has taken the fighter path, at nearly three weeks in, she'll come up to you about taking out a looter. (Flavor responses only, no Mood impact)
  • At nearly a month in, Elaine will make an upgrade suggestion based on the direction you suggested she take with her skills: if a Counselor, she'll suggest a Rec Room; if a fighter, she'll suggest a Shooting Range.
  • At almost two months, Elaine will thank the player for turning her life around (and she'll gain a Mood boost). (Flavor responses only, no Mood impact for the rest of the convo)

Full List

Traits

Initial

  • Shattered: "Elaine seems entirely traumatized by the plane crash, and cannot work in the Shelter or go out in the field."

Gained Via Conversation

  • Counselor: "Elaine's understanding and comforting presence gives her a bonus to her Negotiation skill and a daily Morale boost."

OR

  • Fierce: "Elaine's dogged determination to survive against the odds has given her a bonus to her Melee skill, and an additional 5% melee damage."

Play Style

Depending on how you select Elaine's perks, she could either be a decent fighter or a helpful counselor. While she doesn't have a high pain threshold, her tolerance for the undead is middling, making her a good B-list companion for supply runs, even though her low Strength limits her carry weight somewhat. As a counselor, Elaine builds her Negotiation skills quickly, and her daily Morale boost can be especially helpful on rougher weeks in the Shelter.
